Rumours are flying that to celebrate 30 years of the Mercedes G-wagen off-roader, AMG will be producing a twin-turbo V12 version to debut in April.
The current V8-powered G55 produces 507 bhp and 700 lb/ft of torque, but this new 6.0L biturbo V12 will reportedly put out 612hp and 737lb ft- probably enough to go off-roading with, then. The power will supposedly go through the Mercedes Speedshift Plus 7G-tronic transmission.
With the combined fuel consumption of the (green, by comparison) V8 G55 being 17.8mpg, it seems like this might be a heavy drinker, but Mercedes reckons the new SL 65 AMG with the same engine will manage 24.4 mpg- add a bit of weight and you might get a similar figure.
According to Caradisiac, this outlandish venture will be shown off in April, with sales starting in June at a price of €220,000. That’s about £184,000 or $291,000 USD.
