Porsche has released a handful of new photos and a trickle of information about their hybrid supercar, the 918 Spyder.
The company say the development of the car has entered the “next phase,” with production due to start in September 2013.
The car features a conventional internal combustion engine (a 570 bhp 4.6L V8), but with two electric motors to deliver power directly to the wheels, one for the front and one for the back. Thanks to this, Porsche say that the car will have a fuel consumption of a mind-boggling 94mpg from a car with more than 770 bhp.
The car will have a top speed of 201 mph, the company says, with a 0-62 time of less than 3 seconds. The question you’re all dying to ask, however, is how far the car can go on a single charge, using only electric power. Well, it’s a rather laughable 15 miles (luckily there’s also an engine to keep the batteries charged).
“What we are doing with the 918 Spyder is redefining driving fun, efficiency and performance,” said Wolfgang Hatz, Member of the Executive Board Research and Development of Porsche.
